To help with trip planning I need to know how many 'lock-miles' there are from where I am to where I want to go, this usually means thumbing through many pages of my Thames Guide adding them up. Once I have the number I can divide by 5 and, assuming a lock takes the same time as travelling 1 mile, I should have an estimate of how long the trip will take.
To make life easier I decided to make a little chart to help with this which I have laminated and stuck in my log book. I haven't been able to verify it yet but it should be good enough for rough estimating.
The first table shows lock-miles between various places and the second table shows estimated cruising times (assuming an average of 5 mph). If you want a copy just click on the image below to get a single page view and print one. All I ask is that if you notice any howling errors please let me know so I can correct it!
